Abstract

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory condition of unknown etiology characterized by aching and stiffness in the shoulder and in the pelvic girdle and neck. Radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging all have indicated the presence of a synovitis in proximal joints and periarticular structures. Usually, the response to low dose prednisolone (10¡20 mg/day) is rapid, with nearly complete resolution of symptoms after a few days of therapy. Because synovitic symptoms of PMR mimic common musculoskeletal diseases, PMR is difficult to diagnose correctly. For example, osteoarthritis, impingement syndrome, spondylosis, fibromyalgia and otherwise are included, but also malignancy and infection must be ruled out. Rarely reported in domestic articles, we made report one case with a brief review of related papers.
